New materials have been among the greatest inventions of humankind and define historical periods of civilization- The Stone Age, The Bronze Age, The Steel Age, for example. Material scientists and engineers are at the forefront of opening the door to new technologies in other engineering disciples, such as civil, chemical, aeronautical, biomedical, and electrical engineering, just to name a few.  Discoveries in nanotechnology are creating revolutionary materials, such as nanogears that are made of carbon atoms, that will transform how humans design and build new buildings, medicines, and other products.
